A first weekend in Farmington
Give Farmington a real place in the trip: an unhurried arrival, one cultural visit and a little time by the river.
Start with the days you actually have
A Friday evening arrival and a Sunday afternoon departure leave one full day, not three. For that shape of weekend, our recommendation is to stay close to Farmington and choose a single main outing. The longer Four Corners journeys deserve their own day. Putting every famous place on the same list disguises the amount of driving and preparation involved.
Arrival: settle in before adding an outing
Check in, locate your next morning’s breakfast and decide where to have dinner before setting off again. If daylight and conditions suit, choose a short out-and-back on the Animas River trails. Turning around at a time you choose keeps this first outing adjustable. Save a longer walk for a morning when you are rested and have checked the route.
First full day: a cultural anchor
Make Aztec Ruins the main visit. Read its current visitor information before leaving, and decide which parts of the site suit your group. Keep the afternoon flexible: lunch, a museum visit if its opening hours fit, or a return to Farmington. A second archaeological site can make sense for interested adults, but it should be a choice rather than a requirement.
Departure day: stay close
A museum or a short riverside walk is easier to shorten than a remote excursion. Set a latest departure time from Farmington and work backward from that. If a late breakfast and packing use the morning, leave the optional stop out. A relaxed end to the trip is more useful than a rushed visit made only to complete an itinerary.
With an extra day
Choose one of Mesa Verde, Chaco or Bisti according to interests and current access. Each has a different planning problem; an available day does not automatically make all three suitable. Use the day selector to make a first shortlist, then check the linked official information.
