Chaco Canyon: plan the approach first

Use the park’s route instructions

The NPS warns that some GPS suggestions use private or unsuitable roads. Its published northern approach leaves US 550 and includes a substantial rough, unpaved section; weather can make access impassable. Follow the park’s directions and current-condition links, and contact the park if the condition of your intended approach is unclear. A route drawn by a phone is not an access confirmation.

Check the vehicle as well as the weather

Before committing, confirm that your vehicle is suitable for the road conditions and that a rental agreement allows the intended use. Those are separate decisions. Allow time for a slower approach and a daylight return. If the road advice or your arrangements do not support the trip, switch to a local day; you have not “missed” Chaco by declining an unsuitable journey.

Keep the first visit focused

Six major sites lie along the Canyon Loop Drive, and the park publishes information about self-guided visits and ranger programmes. Use that official overview to choose a manageable visit. Our suggestion is to give a small number of places enough time for interpretation, rather than racing between every stop with a camera. Programme availability depends on staffing and conditions.

Plan the whole day on paper

• Confirm the exact approach and return route.
• Agree a latest departure from the park.
• Pack food, water and the items your group needs without depending on a stop en route.
• Save the park instructions and relevant maps for offline use.
• Tell a trusted person your intended journey and return plan.

Keep a satisfying alternative

A combination of Aztec Ruins and Farmington’s museums can make a worthwhile cultural day when the remote drive is unsuitable. It should be an intentional second option, not a hurried collection of leftovers. Read our visiting notes before travelling through the region.
