Bisti Badlands: know what kind of outing this is

A wilderness outing, not a signed garden walk

The BLM describes Bisti/De-Na-Zin as remote, uneven and largely trail-less, with informal routes. Cell coverage is limited and drinking water is unavailable. Access roads can become difficult or impassable after rain or snow. Read the current BLM visitor information before deciding whether this is the right outing for your group.

Choose a conservative first plan

Do not make a famous formation found in a photograph your only destination. Choose a legal entry point, a route you can navigate and a turnaround that leaves generous daylight. Save offline navigation and know how to use it. If you cannot confidently make and follow that plan, investigate an appropriately qualified guide or choose a developed visitor site instead.

Conditions decide the day

A forecast for the town is only one part of the decision: check the intended access road and destination as well. Do not continue onto a deteriorating road because the itinerary says this is the Bisti day. Have a local alternative ready before leaving. For mixed-age groups, agreement about when to turn back is as important as enthusiasm at the start.

Photograph without moving the landscape

BLM rules prohibit drones and mechanical travel within the wilderness. Do not disturb cultural material, collect petrified wood or damage formations. Keep fragile surfaces intact and leave discoveries where they lie. The photograph is the souvenir. Avoid giving others an off-trail shortcut that crosses land where access has not been established.

• What conditions would cancel the outing?
• Where does the permitted approach end?
• What is the turnaround time?
• Does every person have appropriate water, food, clothing and equipment?
